The government's Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) was created in June 2007 following the Departments of Education and Skills and Trade and Industry being disbanded.

The department is responsible for further and higher education, science, innovation, and adult learning, to raise participation in these areas, in particular equipping people with basic literacy and numeracy sills.
