The Electoral Commission is an independent body set up by the UK Parliament. Their aim is integrity and public confidence in the democratic process.

Financial accounts for smaller political parties published

The Electoral Commission – the independent elections watchdog – has published the latest financial accounts of UK political parties and accounting units with income and expenditure of £250,000 or less in the year ending 31 December 2010. The period includes the UK general election as well as local elections in England and Wales on 6 May 2010. The deadline for parties and accounting units with income or expenditure of more than £250,000 to submit their accounts is 7 July, and the Commission will publish those accounts at the end of July.

Political parties’ latest donations and borrowing figures published

Ten political parties registered in Great Britain reported accepting over £8.8 million in donations between 1 January and 31 March 2011, according to new figures published by the Electoral Commission, the independent party funding watchdog. During the first quarter of 2011, six parties also received payments from public funds totalling just over £2.1 million.

Complete set of turnout figures for referendum now published

The Chief Counting Officer for the referendum and Chair of the Electoral Commission, Jenny Watson, has announced the final set of provisional turnout figures for the referendum on the voting system for UK Parliamentary elections.
