Department: Metropolitan Police AuthorityPublished: 2010-06-09 09:13:0729/108 June 2010 MPS stop and search tactics to be discussed A meeting of the Metropolitan Police Authority Strategic and Operational Policing Committee will be held on Thursday 10 June in Meeting Room 1, 10 Dean Farrar Street, London, SW1H 0NY, at 2.00pm. All members of the Authority have been invited to discuss current MPS Stop and Search practice. This police tactic continues to provoke a high level of public interest and debate, and will only be seen to be successful when the vast majority of people in all communities support its use in successfully tackling criminal and violent activity. The report explores several issues including: disproportionality in stop and search for BME groups, the rise in young people carrying knives or guns and the subsequent rise in violent youth crime, Operation Pennant, the MPS programme to collect and analyse stop and search data, and community engagement to increase public understanding of why this tactic is widely used. Stop and search is a vital tool in the Operation Blunt 2 tool box. But in order to explain to young people what Operation Blunt 2 is about, why stop and search is so important, the dangers of carrying a knife, and relevant legislation, Operation Blunt 2 has now established a Young Londoners Engagement Program. Members will also discuss the European Court of Human Rights ruling on Section 44, the Next Steps project, which involves a number of activities intended to demonstrate the effective and efficient ‘intelligence led’ use of stop and search, and individuals’ right to access Stops data .
