37/1029 June 2010 Responding to Home Secretary Teresa May’s announcement on police reform to the Association of Police Authorities (APA) and Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) annual conference on 29 June, Kit Malthouse said: “What a breath of fresh air Theresa May is turning out to be. At City Hall we have laboured for two years under the dead hand of the Home Office, interfering with, and often obstructing, local accountability. Now at last it looks like we have a Home Secretary who realises that local delivery needs local control. “In London we have made big strides in the right direction with Boris already creating a direct line of accountability to the Met and we are getting results. But now we need the Home Office to get rid of its legions of busybodies all trying to control UK policing from their Marsham Street bunker. Only then can we get a clear focus on Londoners’ priorities.” “The test for Theresa May is whether she can overpower the vested interests in the Home Office and deliver on her promises – the prospects are looking good so far.”
